Generators of Biological Wastes
All laboratory that generates biohazardous wastes must comply with the intent of the UH
Biohazardous Waste Management Guidelines and appropriate County, State and Federal
rules and regulations, including but not limited to: medical, clinical, pathological, research and
industrial laboratories.
1. Workers who generate, handle, and process biological wastes have the potential for
direct exposure to biological agents. Exposures can occur also through direct
inoculation or through inhalation when handling process generates aerosols.
2. Risks to the general public can be associated only with indirect modes of transmission.
1. Containers
a. The selection of Biohazardous waste containers must be to ensure containment
of the waste, to protect the waste handlers, other personnel, and the public from
injury and diseases that could be caused by contact with the wastes.
Biohazardous waste must be discarded into appropriate containers.
b. The factors to be considered in selection of containers are: the type of wastes,
the methods of waste collection, handling and movement, storage conditions,
and the treatment method to be used. The containers must remain intact
throughout collection, handling, moving, storing, and placing the treatment
method.
2. Types of containers
a. Plastic Bags (polyethylene or polypropylene)
Deposit all biohazardous waste into doubled biohazard (minimum three ml thick)
autoclave (red or clear only) bags. These bags must be used for non -sharp, non -
wet wastes. All Biohazardous bags must be tear -resistant and leak proof. They
must be able to contain the waste during its handling, movement, and treatment
and be strong enough to contain the waste without breaking and spilling. All bags
must be properly labeled with the UBHS at the point of generation.
NOTE: Orange colored bags has been prohibited by City and County of
Honolulu.
• Buy either biohazardous bag that indicate proper sterility has been
reached by color change on bags after autoclaving and/or putting
sufficient autoclave indicator tape on all bags being sterilized.
• Once these wastes have been sterilized, remove the biohazard sign from
the bag by painting, crossing -out, obliterating, or deleting the UBHS.
b. Sharps containers
L Sharp wastes (anything that can puncture a red autoclave bag) must be
deposited into a special rigid, leak proof, impervious, autoclavable, and
proper, labeled container, to protect support staff from being injured when
file://CADocuments and Settings\OwnerNy DocumentsT&PUnfection Control 2005\Bioha... 5/5/2005
