Autoclave and daily maintenance:
• Gauges, temperature recorders, etc. must always be calibrated
periodically to assure accuracy.
• Wash chamber periodically with trisodium phosphate or a mild
detergent. Never use strong abrasive or steel wool.
• Rinse chamber with tap water and dry with lint free cloth.
• Remove and clean drain strainer.
• Wash, rinse, and dry loading carts as indicated.
• Flush and clean periodically chamber discharge.
• Cracks in minor ones should be repaired, if possible.
f. Many biohazardous wastes that have multiple hazards must not be steam
sterilized because of the potential for exposure of equipment operators to toxic,
radioactive, or other hazardous chemicals. Infectious wastes that must not be
steam sterilized includes those that contain anti -neoplastic drugs, toxic,
chemicals, radioactive, or chemicals that would be volatilized by steam.
Mixed wastes containing tritium, carbon-14 and other radionuclides can be
autoclaved safety. Waste containing flammable or reactive chemicals must not
be autoclaved. Care must be taken to avoid contamination of the equipment.
Autoclaves used for processing radioactive waste must be labeled with the
radiation symbol.
g. Persons involved is steam sterilizing infectious wastes must be educated in
proper techniques to minimize personal exposure to hazards posed by these
wastes. These techniques include use of protective equipment, minimization of
aerosol formation, prevention of spillage of waste during autoclave formation,
prevention of spillage of waste during autoclave loading and unloading,
emergency response and vapor inhalation.
h. All autoclaves, steam sterilizers, retorts, and pressure vessels operating on the
university must be routinely inspected, certified and serviced.
