Section Disposal of Medications, Syringes and Needles Page 1 of 3 <br />5.4 <br />Disposal of Medications 09/10 <br />(California Specific) <br />1. Discontinued medications and/or medications left in the nursing care center after a <br />resident's discharge, which do not qualify for return to the pharmacy, are identified <br />and removed from current medication supply in a timely manner for disposition. <br />2. Medications included in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classification <br />as controlled substances (or those classified as such by state regulation) are subject to <br />special handling, storage, disposal, and record keeping in the nursing care center in <br />accordance with federal and state laws and regulations. <br />3. Methods of disposition are consistent with applicable state and federal requirements, <br />local ordinances, and standards of practice. <br />The director of nursing and the consultant pharmacist will monitor for compliance <br />with federal and state laws and regulations in the handling of medications. Only <br />authorized licensed nursing and pharmacy personnel have access to controlled <br />medications. <br />2. Controlled Substances listed in Schedules II, III, IV and V remaining in the nursing <br />care center after the order has been discontinued are retained in the nursing care <br />center in a securely double locked area with restricted access until destroyed. The <br />director of nursing shall log the stored medications as they are received from the <br />nursing station. <br />3. Controlled Substances shall be destroyed by a registered nurse (RN) employed by the <br />care center and consultant pharmacist or a pharmacist from the contracted pharmacy <br />and transferred to a container marked as "For Incineration Only" for release to a <br />pharmaceutical waste contractor. DO NOT USE A CONTAINER USED FOR <br />SHARPS OR CONTAMINATED WASTE. <br />a. A controlled medication disposition log, or equivalent form, shall be used for <br />documentation. The consultant pharmacist or a pharmacist from the contracted <br />pharmacy will verify accuracy and records shall be retained as per federal privacy <br />and state regulations.
