E'Mohazard Labelingo 0 <br /> Highlights <br /> Policy Statement <br /> Materials contaminated with blood or body fluids shall be labeled and discarded <br /> appropriately. <br /> 6 e: Policy Interpretation and Implementation <br /> Purpose of using Biohazard 1. The primary purposes of the hazard warning label are to warn about possible <br /> Labeling Tags occupational exposure and to prevent accidental injury or illness to anyone who <br /> may be exposed to hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions,equipment,or <br /> operations. <br /> Duration of Biohazard 2. Biohazard labels,tags,or signs will remain in place until the identified hazard is <br /> Labeling Identification eliminated or the hazardous operation is completed. <br /> Exception to Using the 3. Biohazard signs will not be used where red-bagging,guarding,or other positive <br /> Biohazard Tag means of protection or hazard identification are employed. <br /> Identifying Infectious Waste 4. Red bags or other receptacles containing articles contaminated with potentially <br /> infectious material, including contaminated disposable items will be identified by <br /> a biohazard label,tag,or sign. <br /> Double Bagging 5. A second uncontaminated outer bag must be used if the outside of a bag is <br /> contaminated With body fluids(e.g.,If blood splashes onto the container, if the <br /> outside of the container is handled by an employee wearing contaminated gloves, <br /> etc.),to prevent exposure. <br /> Contents of Biohazard Tag 6. Biohazard labeling tags used by our facility shall contain the following <br /> information: <br /> a. The word"Biohazard material"and the biological hazard symbol. (The word <br /> "Biohazard"will be readable at a minimum distance of five feet(1.52 m)or <br /> greater,as warranted by the hazard.) <br /> b. The specific hazardous condition or the instructions to be communicated to the <br /> 'employee(presented in writing,graphically,or both). <br /> Description of Biohazard/ 7. The word"Biohazard"and the hazardous condition shall be depicted and described <br /> Hazardous Conditions so that anyone can understand the nature of the hazard. <br /> Relevant Information 8. All staff will be informed in writing about the meaning of various hazard labels <br /> and related precautions. <br /> Location of Warning Signs 9. Warnings will be affixed as close as possible to their respective hazards by string, <br /> wire,adhesive or other measure to prevent their loss or unintentional removal. <br /> Red Bagging 10.When biohazard identification methods or symbols are not used, red bags or red <br /> containers will be used to identify contaminated materials. <br />
