Disposal of Infectious Waste <br /> All infectious or contaminated waste shall be disposed of in <br /> the following manner: <br /> A. Used Syringes and Needles <br /> Needles will not be recapped , purposely bent or broken <br /> by hand , removed from disposeable syringes or otherwise <br /> manipulated by hand . All parts shall be deposited in <br /> sharp ' s collectors identified as infectious waste . These <br /> sharp collectors are located in the medicine rooms at each <br /> nurses station . These sharps collectors shall be deposited <br /> when 2/3 full or weekly in the infectious waste container <br /> in the locked infectious waste storage area. <br /> B. Syringes used on patients with communicable or infectious <br /> diseases shall be placed in sharps collectors identified <br /> as infectious waste and kept within the contaminated area. <br /> These sharps collectors shall be remove%ifectious <br /> from the contami- <br /> nated area weekly and deposited in the waste <br /> container in the locked infectious waste storage area. <br /> C. Other Infectious or Contaminated Waste <br /> I . Definition: <br /> Swabs , dressings, catheters , nasogastric tubing, <br /> enema tubing, gloves or any item of a disposable <br /> nature that comes in contact with the patient ' s <br /> body secretions would be classified as infectious <br /> waste. <br /> ,2. Equipment: <br /> Whenever possible red heavy duty bags are utilized. <br /> All infectious waste material shall be doubld bagged <br /> in red plastic bags and/or dissolvable bags used <br /> specifically for that purpose. Each red bag must be <br /> securely tied prior to removal from the contaminated <br /> area . <br /> 3. Procedure for Disposal: <br /> A. Treatments: <br /> During treatment all contaminated waste shall be <br /> put into individual plastic bags; the plastic <br /> bags shall be deposited in the plastic attached <br /> to the treatment cart. Following completion of <br /> treatments , the treatment cart bag shall be taken <br />
