FivF,S-rAR <br /> QUALITY CARE,INC <br /> Other Regulated Waste or Other Potentially Infectious Materials(OPIM) <br /> According to OSHA, ®PIM means human body fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, <br /> cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, <br /> saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid visibly contaminated with blood, and all body fluids <br /> in situations where it is difficult or impossible to diferentiate between body fluids. <br /> Disposable sharps - contaminated needles and other contaminated sharps are not bent, <br /> recapped, or removed The shearing or breaking of contaminated needles is prohibited. Self- <br /> sheathing needles are disposed of in a sharps container because there is no guarantee of <br /> correct usage or proper functioning of the device, <br /> Isolation Waste - current guidelines do not recommend special handling for isolation waste. <br /> Some states may require that all waste from isolation roorns must be designated as regulated <br /> medical waste. Unless specified by state regulations, isolation waste is handled according to <br /> OSHA definition of biohazard waste. <br /> Contracts - waste hauling contracts with vendors responsible for waste removal must meet <br /> applicable regulations. The facility, in most states, is responsible for the proper containment <br /> and handling of regulated medical waste regarding of the hauling contract. Waste manifest and <br /> logs must be maintained and readily available. <br /> 3.0 PROCEDURE <br /> 1. Regulated waste is placed in containers that are closable, constructed to contain all <br /> contents and prevent leakage, appropriately labeled or color-coded, and closed Prior to <br /> removal to prevent spillage or protrusion of contents during handling. <br /> a. Wher, outside contamination of a primary regulated waste container occurs, place <br /> the contaminated container inside (double-bag) a second container that meets the <br /> same regulated waste criteria as the primary container. <br /> b. Seal waste materials from regulated waste receptacles in regulated waste <br /> collection boxes. <br /> c. Turn regulated waste coliection boxes over to a waste disposal company when the <br /> receptacles are three-quarters (3/4)full. <br /> • if the facility does not use a waste disposal company, write a procedure that <br /> specifies the regulated waste treatment and disposal process for the facility. <br /> • Complete the Reguiated Waste Collection form as it relates to the facility. <br /> d. Seat regulated waste material boxes and place them in a secured area until picked <br /> up by the waste disposal company. <br /> e.
