Contaminated sharps are discarded immediately or as soon as possible in containers <br /> that are closable, puncture-resistant, leak proof on sides and bottoms, and labeled or <br /> color-coded appropriately. Secured sharps disposal containers are available in the <br /> medication room and laundry areas. <br /> a. Place contaminated sharps in appropriate containers immediately, or as soon as <br /> possible, after use. Ensure that sharps containers do not have items protruding <br /> from the top. <br /> b Replace sharps, containers when they are 3/4 full. Place the lid on the container <br /> prior to moving. <br /> c. Ensure that reusable sharps containers are not opened, emptied, or cleaned <br /> manually or in any other manner that would expose employees to the risk of <br /> percutaneous injury. <br /> d. Place sharps containers in a secondary container if leakage is possible. The <br /> secondary container must be constructed and labeled like the first container. <br /> e. Place the disposable sharps container in the infectious waste box. <br /> f. Replace the discarded sharps container with a new container. <br /> 3. Washbasins and emesis basins are cleaned and decontaminated as soon as feasible <br /> after visible contamination. <br /> 4. Broken glassware that may be contaminated is picked up using mechanica! means, <br /> such as a brush and dustpan. <br /> 5. Appropriate disinfectants include a diluted bleach solution and EPA-registered <br /> tuberculocides or products registered against HlV1HBV. <br /> 6. Fresh solutions of diluted household bleach made up daily (every 24 hours) are used <br /> for disinfection of environmental surfaces and for decontamination of sites following <br /> initial cleanup (i.e., wiping up) of spills of blood or other potentially infectious materials. <br /> Contact time for bleach is generally considered to be the time it takes the product to air <br /> dry. <br /> 7.
