The 2007 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) Guidelines for Isolation Precautions will be utilized in this facility with some modifications.
Standard Precautions combine the major features of Universal Precautions and Body Substance
Isolation and are based on the principle that all blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions (except
sweat), nonintact skin, and mucous membranes may contain transmissible infectious agents. Standard
Precautions consist of a group of infection prevention practices that apply to all residents, regardless of
suspected or confirmed infection status, in any setting in which healthcare is delivered. These include
hand hygiene; use of glove, gown, mask, eye protection, or face shield, depending on the anticipated
exposure; and safe injection practices.
Standard precautions will be employed by all personnel for all residents at all times.
Transmission -Based Precautions will be employed for known or suspected infections for which the
route of transmission/prevention is known. The transmission -based categories are the following:
Airborne
• Droplet
• Contact
The above isolation precautions may be instituted by a physician, the infection preventionist, the
director of nurses, the assistant director of nurses, or by the nursing supervisor and may be
discontinued only by one of the above. Isolation Precautions are considered a nursing assessment and
judgment. Delegate authority to make infection preventionist or designees (e.g., resident care unit
charge nurses) responsible for making infection control decisions concerning resident placement and
assignment of Transmission -Based Precautions. A resident may be placed in Isolation Precautions
without a physician's order. Notify your infection preventionist.
settings, June 2007.
