?t <br />r. <br />RECEPTION CENTER <br />DEUEL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTION <br />TRACY, CALIFORNIA <br />MEDICAL AND NURSING POLICY <br />for <br />NEEDLE AND SYRINGE CONTROL <br />Title: The purpose of this policy is to establish a procedure for the procurement, <br />accountability, secure storage, control and disposal of needles and syringes in the <br />Reception Center (RC) Medical Department, Deuel Vocational Institution. <br />Policy: There shall be an established procedure for the procurement, accountability, <br />secure storage, control and disposal of needles and syringes in the RC at Deuel <br />Vocational Institution. This policy will take into consideration the institutional <br />requirements and the available staff. <br />Purpose and Objectives: <br />A. To establish procurement, accountability, secure storage and control of all <br />needles and s obtained, maintained and distributed within the RC <br />Medical Department while complying with policies and procedures for the <br />safe and proper disposal of all use needles and syringes. <br />B. This procedure is designed and written to establish and provide guidelines <br />for medical staff. <br />67 <br />A, Needle and Syringe Procurement <br />1. Requests for Needles and Syringes will be sent to the procurement <br />MTA. <br />2. The Procurement MTA will deliver needles and syringes to the RC <br />Medications MTA who will place them in the Locked Syringe Control <br />Closet located in the RC Medication Room. The Syringe Control Closet <br />will be secured with lock opened by key number MKPH2. This key <br />will be included on the key groups of the RC Medication MTA, the <br />Supervising Registered a and the Pharmacist I and II. <br />3. The Medications A will keep a daily log of needles and syringes <br />received and used maintaining an accurate count of the total number of <br />each item. <br />4. All pre -loaded syringes with attached needles containing <br />pharmaceuticals or biologicals will be ordered from the Pharmacy. These <br />items will be stored in cor ce with manufacturer recommendations to <br />insure stability and efficacy. Items requiring storage between 2 and 8 <br />degrees C (33 and 46 degrees F) will be stored in the medication <br />refrigerator. <br />
