Medical Waste Storage Methods <br />All medical waste shall be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area <br />until transported by the Biohazardous Waste Contractor. All biohazardous waste shall be <br />stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers <br />and are kept clean and in good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs. The <br />wording of the warning shall say in English "CAUTION- BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE <br />STORAGE AREA- UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT" and in Spanish <br />"CUIDADO ZONA DE RESIDUOS BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS PROHIBDA LA <br />ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS". The biohazardous waste bags and <br />filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a temperature above 32 <br />degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any waste has been placed in the <br />container. <br />All reusable rigid containers that are used for accurnulation, transportation and storage of <br />medical waste shall be washed and decontaminated after a maximum of 7 days or less if <br />visible soiled. The approved method for decontamination is manual agitation to remove <br />visible soil using an approved solution. The solution shall be allowed to cover the surface <br />for a minimum of 3 minutes. The amount of solution mixed shall be no more than may be <br />used at any one time. <br />E. Emergency Action Plan <br />While it is highly unlikely that the Biohazards Waste Contractor would experience a shutdown of <br />operations, contingencies include retention of medical waste for not more than 7 days from point <br />go of generation above 32 degrees Fahrenheit or after 7 days use of an alternate Biohazardous Waste <br />Contractor. Another contingency for less well defined emergency situations would be to contact <br />the Department of Health Services, Medical Waste Program at (916) 327-6904 for guidance. <br />F. Medical Waste Contractor <br />Sanitec USA, Inc., 2900 Apron Avenue, Bldg. 1260, Atwater, CA 95301, contact telephone <br />1-866-726-4832, is the authorized contractor for the removal, transportation and treatment of <br />medical waste generated by Deuel Vocational Institution. <br />G. At the Conclusion of Each Service Call, Medical Waste Contractor Shall: <br />Rev. 06/07 <br />Remove all medical wastes according to the scheduled time frame specified under <br />"Transportation of Medical Waste to Disposal Area". <br />Clean and disinfect each storage bin, locker and/or area; as needed, maintain designated <br />medical waste sites free of medical waste spills and any debris related to the pickup of <br />medical waste. <br />Inspect all designated medical waste containers to ensure compliance with HSC, Chapter <br />9, commencing with Section 118275. The institution will conduct periodic inspection of <br />the storage bins and lockers and its immediate area. Contractor shall immediately correct <br />all unsanitary conditions or deficiencies as noted by institution inspections. <br />
