For skin contaminated by blood and/or blood products, wash the area thoroughly with <br /> soap and water and apply a topical disinfectant such as alcohol or the equivalent. <br /> 2. For skin irritated by chemicals: <br /> a. Strong acid or alkali: immediately flush with cold water for one minute and <br /> then wash. Do not scrub. <br /> b. Other: Consult label or MSDS on product. <br /> 3. For splashes in the eye by blood or chemicals, flush eyes with eye wash continuously <br /> for 10 minutes. Avoid rubbing the eyes. <br /> 4. For a skin laceration from broken glass or sharp metal piece, remove all foreign <br /> materials projecting from the wound, clean the cut with soap and water, apply topical <br /> disinfectant and apply bandage. If the cut is severe, apply direct pressure on the <br /> wound and seek medical attention. <br /> 5. When skin puncture occurs from a needle or other blood-contaminated sharp object, <br /> bleeding should be encouraged. Then wash the area with soap and water. Place <br /> clean dry bandage over wound. Fill out "Percutaneous Exposure Report". <br /> 6. Report all accidents to your supervisor immediately, using form S2. (Be sure to write <br /> legibly; be accurate and complete.) Seek medical attention when required. Fill out <br /> the Employee Injury Report when appropriate. Your supervisor will initiate corrective <br /> action as necessary. <br /> 300.5 Spills and Breakage Protocol <br /> 1. Use brush and dust pan to clean up broken glassware. Do not use bare hands. <br /> 2. Place broken glass in an infectious waste barrel. <br /> 3. For spills involving blood or blood products: <br /> a Whenever possible, remove contaminated clothing immediately. <br /> Wear disposable gloves and protective apparel when cleaning up spills. <br /> a Use paper towels or cloths to remove the spilled material. Wipe toward the <br /> center of the spill. <br /> a If the spill occurred on a non-porous surface and can be removed, remove the <br /> spilled material and then disinfect the surface with 0.05% sodium hypochlorite <br /> (1 part bleach + 99 parts water). <br /> a If the spill occurred on a porous surface or if the spilled material cannot be <br /> removed from the surface, disinfect the area with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (1 <br /> part bleach + 9 parts water).
