General Safety Page 4 of 5 <br /> • Dispose of used towels and gloves as hazardous waste. <br /> • If a tube, bag or bottle containing blood breaks in a centrifuge: <br /> (1) Turn off the centrifuge immediately. <br /> (2) Allow centrifuge to remain closed for 15 minutes to allow small droplets <br /> to settle. <br /> (3) Put on gloves & open the centrifuge carefully. <br /> (4) Remove broken glass and spilled material as described above. <br /> (5) Disinfect exposed surfaces. <br /> 300.6 Chemicals / Paints / Solvents <br /> 1. All Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available for your review. The information is <br /> kept by the Safety Officer. <br /> 2. You must be informed of the hazardous properties of all the chemicals you work with. <br /> 3. Read the label on the container and follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. <br /> 4. Know what the first aid treatment is and be prepared to carry it out immediately if need <br /> be. <br /> 5. Store chemicals in a safe manner and according to the manufacturers' instructions. <br /> 6. Keep containers closed when not in use. <br /> 7. Inspect containers and tubing of corrosive materials at regular intervals. Report leaks <br /> immediately to your supervisor. <br /> 8. If using corrosive materials, know where the closest eye wash and shower are located. <br /> Keep these facilities unobstructed and in working condition at all times. <br /> 9. Use safety glasses, gloves, lab coats and other protective equipment as required. <br /> 300.7 Hazardous Chemical Sills <br /> 1. Whenever possible, remove contaminated clothes immediately. <br /> 2. If chemicals are flammable, extinguish open flames and turn off all electrical <br /> equipment in the immediate area. <br /> 3. Ventilate the room. Avoid inhaling any vapors that may be toxic fumes. Consult <br /> MSDS. <br /> 4.
