Hepatitis B Vaccine Program Page 3 of 4 <br /> 1000.5 POST-EXPOSURE MANAGEMENT <br /> Exposures must be reported immediately after occurrence, to the employee's supervisor. Evaluation <br /> and appropriate interventions such as prophylaxis against hepatitis B infection must be initiated <br /> promptly to be effective. <br /> After an exposure, the following information will be collected on the "Percutaneous Exposure Report", <br /> then placed in the employee's personnel record. <br /> 1. Date and time of exposure. <br /> 2. Job duty being performed by worker at time of exposure. <br /> 3. Details of exposure, including amount of fluid, type of fluid or material, and severity of <br /> exposure (eg, for a percutaneous exposure, depth of injury and whether fluid was <br /> injected; for a skin or mucous membrane exposure, the extent and duration of contact <br /> and the condition of the skin, eg, chapped, abraded, intact) <br /> 4. Description of source of exposure, including donor number and, if known, whether the <br /> source material contained HIV or HBV. <br /> 5. Details about counseling, postexposure management, and follow-up. <br /> DURING ALL PHASES OF FOLLOW-UP, CONFIDENTIALITY OF THE EMPLOYEE AND THE <br /> SOURCE INDIVIDUAL MUST BE PROTECTED! <br /> After occupational exposure, both the exposed employee and the source individual should be <br /> evaluated to determine the possible need for the exposed person to receive prophylaxis against <br /> hepatitis B according to CDC recommendations. <br /> At the time of exposure, any susceptible exposed employee who has not been previously vaccinated <br /> with HBV vaccine should be offered the vaccine.
