March Lane, Stockton, CA 95219
Tel# (2 09) 77-4432
Plan revised after SJC Environmental Health Inspector suggested minor corrections. Inspection conducted 10/8/2010.
I. INTRODUCTION:
Medical waste is regulated under the provisions of California Medical Waste Management Act,Health and Safety
Code, Section 117960. Under these requirements, liquids, semi-solids, solids, sharps, and pharmaceuticals are
classified and managed under very specific requirements, similar to hazardous waste, which includes specific
packaging, labeling and disposal requirements. As a pathology lab,Delta Pathology generates medical wastes on a
regular basis. This document is intended to comply with the act and establish guidance for all Delta Pathology
employees who deal with medical waste directly or indirectly. This plan will be kept in the safety manual/waste
management plan binder.
II. MEDICAL WASTE:
A. Medical Waste—is a biohazardous waste and/or sharps waste that may contain agents infectious to humans.
B. Biohazardous Waste—is waste that may contain pathogens capable of causing disease in human. It is commonly
referred to as"red bag"wastes.Biohazardous wastes must be disposed of at an authorized disposal facility and not
discarded into the regular trash. All biohazardous waste must be accumulated, managed, and disposed of in certified
red bags. These bags shall be impervious to moisture and resistant to tear under normal conditions.Biohazard wastes
include the following:
1. Recognizable blood, body fluids, blood products, and specimen containers contaminated with blood
and body fluids or other potentially infectious materials .
2. Surgical specimens or tissues including specimens placed in formaldehyde or other fixatives.
3. Paper towels, gloves, aprons, and other similar items that are contaminated with blood, body fluids,
and other elements containing potentially infectious materials.
SEGREGATION AND HANDLING OF BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE:
1. When handling biohazard waste, always use appropriate personal protective equipment(PPE)and
follow universal precautions.
2. Biohazard bags used are disposable RED bags of sufficient strength to preclude tearing or bursting
under normal conditions of usage and handling. The bag must meet the standards prescribed by
American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM)and must be certified by the manufacturer.Bags
must be labeled with the words`Biohazardous Waste"or with the international biohazard symbol
and the word"BIOHAZARD".
3. Proper segregation of waste begins at the laboratory bench.Only medical and biohazardous waste
should be disposed in red bags. (blood products, items contaminated with fluid blood products, body
fluids, or other potentially infectious materials(OPIM).
4. Non-contaminated paper towels, gloves, and packaging materials should be disposed as regular trash
in containers lined with WHITE or CLEAR plastic bags.
5. All red bags must remain inside hard-sided,properly labeled secondary containment with tight-fitting
lids.Cardboard boxes,hampers,or other"staging"bags are not allowed.
6. When full, all red bags will be tied and removed from secondary containment and transferred into
properly lidded and secured Stericycle plastic tubs located in the waste storage room.
7. All waste containers will be labeled which contains Delta Pathology's address and other pertinent
information. The wastes are collected weekly by Stericycle.
