8. Biohazard pathological wastes including tissues and specimens in formalin are segregated properly.
All tissues and specimens with formalin are collected and drained. The waste formalin is put in the
liquid waste black drum and collected by Clean Harbors, Inc. for proper transport and disposal. The
drained tissues and contaminated containers are then put in a red bag and tied. The bag is then put in
a separate Stericycle red tub specific for pathological waste. The red tub is properly labeled with
"pathological waste"and is marked"for inceneration only".
9. Recognizable human anatomical remains(i.e. limbs, fingers, etc.)are kept frozen up to 3 weeks for
possible additional test/study.They are properly segregated and dumped together with other tissue
wastes in the designated pathology waste bins.
10. Currently, Delta Pathology does not deal with mixed hazardous or radioactive waste.Plan and
procedure guide will be updated for any change.
11. ThinPrep vials have methanol and specimens that may contain potentially infectious materials.
Discard the liquid solution in the liquid waste drum. The empty vials shall be put either in the
biohazard bag or the solid waste drum for proper disposal.
C. Sharps Waste—sharp or other devices that have rigid edges or protuberances capable of cutting or piercing
including hypodermic needles, syringes, blades, lancets,or broken glass contaminated with biohazard type waste.
SEGREGATION AND HANDLING OF SHARPS WASTE:
1. When handling biohazard waste, always use appropriate personal protective equipment(PPE)and
follow universal precautions.
2. Contaminated sharp wastes must be accumulated in leak proof, rigid,puncture-resistant containers.
3. Each container shall be clearly marked or labeled with the word"Sharps"or with the international
Biohazard symbol and the word"Biohazard".
4. Fill out the accumulation"start date".
5. Add sharps waste only up to the"Fill to Here" line. Dispose containers when they are%full.
6. Fill out the accumulation"end date".Make sure the lids are properly closed.
7. Sharps containers may be placed into tubs or fiber drums along with bagged waste, but do not need
to be bagged unless leakage is possible.
8. All waste containers will be tagged with tracking labels which contains Delta Pathology's address
and other pertinent information. The wastes are collected weekly by Stericycle.
D. Decontamination of Resusable Rigid Containers:
1. Secondary containers such as those reusable metal rigid containers will be disinfected on a monthly
basis and whenever leakage occurs from the bags. The following disinfectant solution can be used:
Hypochlorite solution(10% bleach)500 ppm available chlorine
2. The container will be sprayed and rinsed.Let the disinfectant remain in the surface for a minimum of
three minutes before rinsing.Let the container dry then line with new red biohazard bag.
E. Spill Clean-up Procedure:
1. Put on gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment(PPE)
2. Remove any broken glass or sharps objects from the spill by using mechanical means(i.e. forceps)
then transfer the sharps into an approved sharps container.
3. Contain the spill by carefully pouring appropriate disinfectant(10%bleach/cavicide)around and
on the spill.Cover with paper towels or absorbent pads.
4. Remove the paper towels and repeat process until the soilage is removed.
5. Re-spray area with disinfectant and air dry or let stand for 10 minutes before wiping dry.
6. Place all contaminated paper towels and pads inside a red biohazard bag.
7. Remove PPE and wash hands properly.
