LODI OUTPATIENT SURGICAL CENTER & ENDOSCOPY CENTER OF LODI <br /> Title: Disposal of Regulated Medical Wastes POLICY: EOC 306 <br /> Pae 1 of 2 <br /> State: EFFECTIVE: 10/02/2013 <br /> CMS: 416.51(a) REVIEWED: 4/13/2016 <br /> TJC: EC.004.01.01 EP15, EC.01.01.01 EPS, IC.02.01.01 EP 6, IC.02.01.01.01 EP1 <br /> AAAH C: 8.M <br /> PURPOSE: <br /> To outline the proper procedure for disposal of Regulated Medical Waste to minimize the <br /> transmission of disease and injury. <br /> Definitions <br /> Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) is any solid waste (soiled, semi-soiled or liquid material) that meets <br /> a two part definition, as follows: <br /> A. Generated in the diagnosis, treatment (e.g., provision of medical services) or immunization of <br /> human beings; and <br /> B. Fits into a class of RMW as defined by State and Federal Guidelines, such as: <br /> Human Blood and Blood Products — (Class 3)* <br /> Example: Items saturated/dripping with human blood or with cerebrospinal, synovial, pleural, <br /> peritoneal, amniotic, dialysate, pericardial, semen and vaginal secretions, and other potentially <br /> infectious materials (OPIMs). <br /> Sharps — (Class V <br /> Examples: Syringes, hypodermic needles, glass slides, lancets, scalpels, needles with attached <br /> tubing, suture needles. <br /> Unused Sharps that are Defective or Expired — (Class 7)* <br /> Examples: Unused or outdated blood vials, vaccutainer tubes, hypodermic needles, syringes, <br /> scalpel blades, needles with attached tubing, suture needles, lancets, glass slides. <br /> Cultures and Stocks — (Class 1) <br /> Examples: Live and attenuated vaccines and vaccine vials that are infectious to humans, urine <br /> culture paddles from uriocults, etc. <br /> Pathological Wastes — (Class 2) <br /> Example: Teeth (not dentures). <br /> Animal Waste — (Class 5) <br /> Isolation Wastes from Patients Isolated with "Highly Communicable Diseases" — <br /> Class 6 <br /> Examples: Small Pox, Lassa Fever, Yellow Fever, etc. <br />
