The bags will be <br /> tied when being prepared for transport to prevent spillage in the event the bag is <br /> dumped upside down. <br /> • All sharps will be placed in a sharps container labeled with the words "SHARPS <br /> WASTE" or with the international biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard." <br /> • Sharps containers will be rigid puncture proof containers that when sealed are <br /> leak resistant and not able to be reopened without great difficulty. <br /> • Sharps containers shall be considered "full" when they reach 2/3 capacity or the <br /> manufacturer's full line. <br /> • Lids on filled sharps' containers must be snapped closed, taped, or otherwise <br /> sealed to prevent loss of contents prior to disposal. <br /> • Medical waste will be stored in the Bio-hazardous Waste Storage Area located in <br /> the corridor, next to the staff bathroom. <br /> • The containers will be labeled with the words "Bio-hazardous Waste," or the word <br /> "Biohazard," and the international biohazard symbol. <br /> • This storage area will be closed at all times. <br /> • Access will be limited to Environmental Services (ES) and medical staff. <br /> • Waste consisting of medical and nonmedical waste will be handled as medical <br /> waste except as follows: <br /> o Medical waste mixed with hazardous waste will be treated as hazardous <br /> waste. <br /> Pathology Waste: <br /> All specimens are sent to the pathology laboratories in fixative solution by courier for <br /> examination. <br /> The receiving laboratories are responsible for proper waste disposal after accepting the <br /> specimens. <br /> Medical Waste Storage Methods <br /> All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Bio-hazardous Waste Storage Area <br /> until transported by the medical waste hauler. <br /> Regent Surgical Health-1/1/12 <br />
