Definition of Medical Waste:formed as a result of diagnostic, treatment or immunization <br /> procedure AND is biohazardous or sharps <br /> Biohazardous waste: <br /> • Fluid Blood: liquid or, if dried, capable of liquid state if reconstituted. <br /> • Surgical specimens: POCs [products of conception]; <br /> • Pharmaceutical: drugs returned to health center; expired drugs; vials/ampules of drugs <br /> and immunizations except those listed below; <br /> Sharps: syringes, needles, pre-filled syringes, even with engineering controls in place; <br /> lancets; broken glass vials & slides;vials/ampules of live attenuated immunizations <br /> (Flumist, MMR, Rotavirus,Varicella, &Zoster); <br /> B. Containment: <br /> Materials contaminated with fluid blood must be put in red biohazard bags that are kept in rigid <br /> containers that are leak resistant,with tight-fitting covers,clean, in good repair and labeled <br /> "biohazardous waste" on the lid and side ICY <br /> POCs are placed in containers that are frozen until they are picked up, not longer than ttedays. <br /> The sides and lid are labeled "Pathology waste" or"PATH:"= <br /> Pharmaceutical waste is labeled "INCINERATON ONLY." <br /> Sharps must go into sharps containers,which must have tight lids or be taped closed when full, labeled <br /> "sharps waste" or"biohazard".This includes needles that are retracted or covered. <br /> C. Storage: all biohazardous waste must be stored in a locked closet with a biohazard warning <br /> sign affixed. Freezers with biohazardous medical waste must have the biohazardous warning <br /> affixed. <br /> D. Hauling and treatment: PPMM contracts with Stericycle for both hauling and <br /> treatment/disposal. Copies of contract are available from Facilities Dept. <br />
