E
Eli f; o 04 TWO
El
This Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) Management Plan has been developed for Omnicare
pharmacies in California, Florida, Michigan and Washington State. Omnicare pharmacies are
typically closed door, long term care pharmacies that provide prescriptions for nursing homes and
assisted living facilities. The purpose of this RMW Management Plan is to provide guidance and
describe requirements for the proper management of regulated medical waste in our pharmacies.
Additionally, this plan is intended to meet certain state -specific requirements for the following:
• Florida Biomedical Waste Operating Plans
• Michigan Medical Waste Management Plans
• California Medical Waste Management Plans
• Washington Biomedical Waste Operating Plans
Site specific information such as pharmacy name, address, phone number, location of RMW
storage, individual responsible for RMW management, spill material location and estimated
amount of RMW generated is provided in Attachment A.
While this plan uses the term "Regulated Medical Waste" to describe waste typically associated
as medical waste, some states use the terms "Infectious Waste," "Biomedical Waste," "Biohazard
Waste," and others terms to describe the waste that is noted above. For the purposes of meeting
state -specific requirements for a RMW Management Plan, these terms are used interchangeably.
Should the site have any questions about the contents of this plan, they should contact the CVS
Corporate Environmental Department hotline at 888-412-0287.
r t r-
CVS/Omnicare has reviewed the definition of RMW in each of the states listed above and has
determined that Omnicare sites in these states generate waste that meets the definition of RMW in
their state. A summary of RMW definitions for these four states can be found in Attachment B.
The majority of RMW that is generated at a typical Omnicare site consists of both used and
unused sharps. In addition, Omnicare sites may generate cultures from infusion pharmacies or
other wastes that would trigger the RMW definition. CVS/Omnicare has evaluated waste from
cleaning of dirty infusion pumps and Total Parental Nutrients (TPN) waste and has elected to
manage these waste streams as part of Omnicare's hazardous waste management program.
In addition to generating RMW, the pharmacy may also generate P -listed, D -listed and/or U -listed
hazardous waste, and as such is registered as either a Small Quantity Generator (SQG) or Large
Quantity Generator (LQG) of hazardous waste. Sites in Florida and Michigan take advantage of
their state's Universal Pharmaceutical Waste (UPW) rule and as such are registered as
