Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG or VSQGs). Hazardous waste
management guidance is presented in separate stand-alone documents.
The pharmacy must follow RMW generation management practices described below.
STORAGE AND CONTAINER LABELING
Sharps and other RMW shall be placed in containers at the point of generation and have sufficient
strength to prevent bursting and tearing during handling, storage, or transportation. Ruptured or
leaking packages of biomedical waste shall be placed into a larger container without disturbing
the original seal. When moving sharps and other RMW containers from the area of use to the
main storage accumulation area, the containers must be:
• Closed immediately prior to removal or replacement to prevent spillage or protrusion of
contents during handling, storage, transport, or shipping;
• Placed in a secondary container if leakage is possible. The second container shall be
closable, constructed to contain all contents and prevent leakage during handling, storage,
transport, or shipping, and labeled.
Sharps containers will be kept in a secure area of the pharmacy away from non -employees. The
pharmacy must place and maintain RMW and sharps in rigid, leak resistant, and puncture resistant
containers which are secured tightly to preclude loss of the contents and which are designed for
the safe containment of sharps. Sharps and other RWM containers shall be inspected and
maintained or replaced by Omnicare personnel whenever necessary to prevent overfilling.
Signage shall be posted to indicate that RMW is being stored in the waste accumulation area.
During use sharps and other RMW containers shall be:
• Easily accessible to personnel and located as close as is feasible to the immediate area
where sharps or RMW is generated;
• Maintained upright throughout use, and replaced routinely and not be allowed to overfill;
and
• Kept out of reach of unauthorized personnel at all times.
Prior to transportation, the containers must be sealed to prevent any discharge of the contents at
any time until the container enters the treatment system.
The sharps and other RMW containers/bags must be labeled with the biohazard symbol and with
words that identify the container contains medical waste ("Biohazard Waste", "Regulated Medical
Waste" or "Medical Waste"). Additionally, all RMW and sharps containers will be labeled with
