Individual Omnicare pharmacies should not be making arrangements with waste transports that
have not been approved by the CVS Corporate Environmental Department.
The final treatment methodology is by incineration. In the states where CHES transports the
RMW, they are licensed in those states to transport the waste. If a regulatory agency requests
proof that CHES is licensed to transport RMW in your state, please contact the CVS Health
Corporate Environmental Department.
Additionally, certain Omnicare pharmacies in California (Canoga Park, Lodi, Cerritos, and San
Diego) hold IV certification courses and generate used sharps as result of live stick procedures
mandated by the State of California as a prerequisite for passing the course. These Omnicare
pharmacies utilize Stericycle Sharps Mail Back Solutions to manage the final treatment and
disposal of sharps. These IV certification classes are generally offered once per month. Stericycle
contact information is as follows:
Name: Stericycle Specialty Waste Solutions, Inc.
Address: 28161 N. Keith Drive
City, State, Zip: Lake Forest, IL 60045
Phone Number: 847-367-5910
Stericycle provides FDA and USPS approved mail -back sharps containers and return -by -mail
shipping boxes. Sharps containers are mailed via USPS to a Stericycle treatment facility for final
treatment. The final treatment methodology is by autoclave.
Omnicare requires documentation of medical waste disposal in every location that generates
RMW. This documentation is completed through a signed manifest/shipping document that
indicates that the TSDF has received the RMW. The Pharmacist in Charge or designee shall fill
out the manifest, bill of lading or shipping paper and maintain the completed generator and final
copy on file for three (3) years. This documentation shall be maintained in the Omnicare
environmental binder, or on the waste vendor portal. Management of the regulated waste program
including maintenance of documentation for this pharmacy is coordinated by the Pharmacist in
Charge or their designee.
CVS Omnicare employees receive Hazardous Waste Management Program training upon hire that
is commensurate with their hazardous waste related job responsibilities. Omnicare management
personnel will also cover this management plan with employees that manage RMW.
Communication to the sites from the CVS Corporate Environmental Corporate Department will
detail compliance with this management plan and will include:
• Definition and Identification of Biomedical Waste
0
