• If spill is on carpeting, sprinkle with absorbent, allow to absorb, then sweep or scoop up.
Never vacuum area or the absorbent placed on the spill. Follow above steps and completely
clean area prior to any vacuuming.
• Place material into waste bag/container.
• Spray and wipe surface with disinfectant until clean.
• Spray again with disinfectant and let stand according to manufacturer's directions (usually
10 minutes). Be sure to block off the area to reduce potential of slips and falls.
• Place all PPE, scoop, and all other cleanup materials into the container and move to the
central waste accumulation area.
• Review procedures to determine the cause of this spill and if procedural changes need to be
made.
The CVS Corporate Environmental Department oversees and manages the waste disposal vendors
utilized at Omnicare pharmacies and has an approved list of vendors that must be used.
Individual Omnicare pharmacies should not be hiring waste vendors on their own. In most cases,
Omnicare utilizes Clean Harbors Environmental Services (CHES) to manage the off-site
transportation and disposal of our RMW. In California, Omnicare also uses Stericycle to dispose
of sharps generated through their intravenous (IV) training/certification program. CHES's contact
info is as follows:
Name: Clean Harbors Environmental Services
Address: 42 Longwater Drive
City, State, Zip: Norwell, MA 02061
Phone Number: 781-792-5000
In most states, CHES acts as both the transporter of the RMW and final treatment of the RMW at
one of their treatment facilities. When CHES is not the transporter in California, Florida,
Michigan and Washington State, the following companies may be subcontracted by CHES to
transport the waste to a CHES treatment facility:
Name: Action Resources, Inc.
Address: 204 20th Street North
City, State, Zip: Birmingham, AL 35203
Phone Number: 800-228-8845
Name: Tri-State Motor Transit Company
Address: 17235 N 75th Ave - Suite D175
City, State, Zip: Glendale, AZ 85308
Phone Number: 877.427.4730
5
