INFECTION CONTROL <br /> I. Disposal of Wastes - Infectious <br /> A. All used sharps are considered infectious. These include: <br /> 1. Lancets, <br /> 2. Capillary tubes/microcuvdltes, <br /> 3. Needles, <br /> 4. Microscope slides. <br /> B. Sharps disposal <br /> 1. Used sharps are disposed of by putting them in red plastic infectious <br /> waste containers. <br /> 2. The sharps containers, when 3/4 full, are closed and put into the <br /> Medical Waste Hauler container which is kept in an area away from <br /> patient traffic. Once sealed, the sharps containers need to be picked <br /> up in 7 days. (See attachments A, B, and C.) <br /> II. Disposal of Wastes - Non-Infectious <br /> A. Urine samples` <br /> 1. Urine samples may be disposed of by pouring down the sink. The <br /> sink is thoroughly rinsed after each use and cleaned well at the end <br /> of the day. <br /> 2. Urine collecting cups are disposed of into the trash containers. <br /> B. Wastes generated by examinations and used products are not considered <br /> infectious wastes and are simply plastic-bagged and put into the locked trash <br /> container. <br /> C. Wastes which would not be absorbed in the regular trash should be put into <br /> a special red bag and disposed of in the Medical Waste Hauler container. <br /> PR014A - M.1 - <br /> Revised 11/99 <br />
