GUIDELINES FOR PREVENTION OF TRANSMISSION <br /> OF BLOOD DISEASE <br /> r 1. Universal Precautions <br /> a. All health workers who job tasks entail exposure to blood and certain body fluids <br /> (including semen and vaginal secretions) shall observe the CDC recommended <br /> "universal blood and body fluid precautions"for protection against blood-borne <br /> pathogens including HIV and HBV. <br /> b. Because of the nature of their work,this shall include, at a minimum,the following <br /> personnel: doctors, nurse practitioners, and clinic nurses. <br /> C. Additionally, any employee who performs a task that involves an inherent potential for <br /> mucous membrane or skin contact with blood and body fluids as described above, shall <br /> observe the same precautions. <br /> d. The precautions shall be used consistently for all patients. <br /> 2. Workplace Practices <br /> a. Equipment <br /> 1. Gloves shall always be used in the following situations and changed after the <br /> following situations and changed after contact with each client. <br /> a. For touching blood and body fluids, <br /> b. For touching mucous membranes <br /> 1. Includes inside of the mouth, vagina, rectum. <br /> C. For touching non-intact skin of all patients or when health care worker's <br /> skin is not intact. <br /> d. For performing venipuncture or finger sticks <br /> e. When processing blood or any body fluid specimen <br /> f. For cleaning or handling items or surfaces soiled by blood or other body <br /> fluids <br /> b. Hand washing <br /> 1. Hands shall be thoroughly washed with soap and water after removal of gloves. <br /> 2. Hands and other skin surfaces shall be washed immediately and throughly with <br /> soap and water if contaminated with blood or other body fluids. <br /> C. Needle and Sharps Disposal <br /> 1. All health care workers shall take precautions to prevent accidental injuries with <br /> needles, scalpels,or other sharp devices used during procedures, when cleaning re- <br /> usable instruments, during disposal or needles,or when handling sharp instruments <br /> during or after procedures. <br /> .3- <br /> Reviewed 12/97 <br />
