I subsequently reviewed the wore plan in detail and provided comi-rients
to Albert Lamarre, Site 300 Project Leader for I and C. The final work plan was
submitted 4 December 1987 and is acceptable. The time schedule and specific
work items will be updated in each Envirormiental Investigations Quarterly Report
which will show the new and old versions tvr comparison.
During the inspection we visited the HE process area including former wastewater
lagoons at Buildings 806 and 807 and the Class II surface impoundments (SIs)
which now accept the HE wastewater. The SIs are governed by i;raste Discharge
Requirements (WDRs) Order No. 85-188, LI NL acknow i edged receipt of our 26 Octo-
ber 1987 letter regarding closure of the old lagoons in which we outlined severe
problems with the data submitted ( i .e. , soil samples were analyzed for total
metals rather than soluble as agreed to years earlier). Fred Hoffman said LLNL
has resampled and run the Waste Extraction Test and will submit a report in
January 1988 summarizing all data submitted in several reports over .the last
year. After that we can evaluate whether any additional testing is needed and
determine the final cleanup and/or closure requirements. The upgradient well at
the SIs also is contaminated with HE, and this contamination must be investi-
REVIEWED BY:
