kn KLEINFELDER
4.2.2 Purpose and Methodology
One of the objectives or maJjectives of this investigation was to evaluate the extent of asbestos in
J
surface soil outside of landfill areas to develop a "zero line" of asbestos presence for
developing a remedial workplan for these areas.
The remedial soil investigation included collection of samples on the site perimeter, the
drainage canal, and locations outside of areas where asbestos had been previously detected.
The investigation included surface and subsurface samples which were collected near the limits
of and within estimated WMU landfill zones.
Prior to sample collection, the sampling location was inspected for soil moisture content. If the
soil appeared to be dry, distilled water was sprayed to reduce the release of dust particles.
Surface vegetation and approximately 1 inch of soil was removed with a decontaminated hand
shovel. A ground surface (GS) sample was then collected and placed in a zip lock plastic bag
and labeled with a Kleinfelder sample label.
A hand auger was used for 1-foot and 2-foot deep samples. A hole of approximately 18 inches
in base diameter was excavated using a decontaminated hand shovel to depths of approximately
8 inches and 20 inches for the 1-foot and 2-foot deep samples respectively. This hole was
excavated to reduce the potential for cross contamination between the ground surface and
subsurface soil. A hand auger was then advanced to the depths of 12 inches and 24 inches
from the original surface and soil samples were collected from the auger tip. The tools were
decontaminated between each sample depth and location using a brush and distilled water.
Soil samples were logged and transported to Kellco Analytical Laboratory for.PLM asbestos
analysis under chain-of-custody at the end of each field day.
4.2.3 Analytical Methods
Soil samples were submitted under chain-of-custody to Kellco Analytical Laboratory in
Sacramento, California, which is certified by the State of California to perform bulk sample
analysis for asbestos. Soil samples were analyzed by polarized light microscopy (EPA Method
600/M4-020). The analytical results were presented in percentage ranges of asbestos fibers
detected as chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite and other amphibole fibers. The limit of
quantification for the analysis is approximately 1% by area.
CR14-92-12 Page 11 of 39 24-220109-F09
Copyright 1992 KLeinfetder, Inc.
