KLEINFELDER
downstream sample. A fifth metal, vanadium, was only detected in the upstream sample and
was reported at a concentration equal to its reporting limit of 0.01 mg/1.
None of the metals were detected at concentrations exceeding MCLs except for aluminum in
the upstream sample. Aluminum in the upstream sample, SW-1, was detected at 1.2 mg/l,
which is slightly higher than the primary MCL of 1.0 mg/1.
The analytical results are summarized on Table 5-10.
5.4.1.2 General Minerals
Total dissolved solids in the surface water ranged from 36 mg/l (upstream) to 51 mg/l
(downstream) on the sampling date. The water type of the surface water was a
calcium/bicarbonate. Only one constituent, iron, was detected at concentrations exceeding
MCLS. Iron exceeded the secondary MCL of 0.3 mg/l in all three surface water samples, with
the highest concentration (0.9 mg/1) being reported in the upstream sample. These data are
summarized on Table 5-10.
5.4.1.3 Asbestos
The surface water samples had asbestos fibers that exceed 10 microns in length in
concentrations ranging from 7 to 66 million fibers per liter. These results are summarized in
Table 5-10. The EPA has set the national ambient water quality goal at 30,000 fibers per liter
and on July 30, 1992, enacted a drinking water standard of 7.0 million fibers per liter. The 7
million fiber goal applies only to fibers greater than 10 micron in length in the surface water
samples. The concentrations of total asbestos fibers (all lengths) in the surface water samples
ranged from 562 to 1272 million fibers per liter.
5.4.2 May 1991 Sampling
Four surface water samples were collected and submitted to Kellco Laboratories for asbestos
analysis by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Sampling locations are shown on
Drawing 2. Due to varying storm water flows at the site, samples were obtained on two
different dates (May 12 and May 20, 1991). During the May 12, 1990 sampling activities,
storm water was sampled at SW-1, -2 and -4 locations, but samples could not be obtained at
the SW-3 location due to lack of flows. Because of this condition, Kleinfelder resampled
CR14-92-12 Page 21 of 39 24220109-1709
Copyright 1992 Kleinfelder, Inc.
