f
2 August 11, 1986
Dust Analysis
Figure 1 shows the uncoated mineral wool. Figure 2 shows that the mineral wool
is encapsulated with the removal encauiant. The analysis of the microphoto-
graphs shows that -the removal encapsulant effectively coats the fiber. Although
no measurements were taken, it is highly likely because of the amount of coating
on the fiber, that the coated fiber would lose its aerodynamic properties.
Asbestos Wetting
The photomicrographs in Figures 3 and 4 show that the BWE 5000 removal encap-
sulant wets both types of asbestos fibers. When both types of asbestos fibers
were placed in contact with the removal encapsulant,'the wetting occurred almost
instantaneously.
The results of the evaluation of BWE 5 show it'to be an outstanding material
for wetting and encapsulation of asbestos fibers.
It has been a pleasure working with you on this phase of the program. When you
are aready to do the additional work we have discussed, please contact me.
Very truly yours,
William Mirick
Polymer Science and
Technology Section
W14 : me
Enclosure
