IMMATURE MOSQUITO STAGES - It is not likely that ter-holding wastes will be present for the seven to 14 days required for the egg-larval-pupa cycle of mosquitoes to be completed because the exposed wastes are supposed to be covered with new wastes daily. However, when their presence is suspected, water held in cans, old dres, etc., can be siphoned out with a turkey baster or other similar apparatus. The water is put into a white enamel pan where any mosquito larvae and pupae can more easily be seen. ASPS AND COCKROACHES The inspector should make observations for wasps and cockroaches on a routine basis. Wasps, primarily yellov jackets, are diurnal and will be found feeding on putrescible wastes from time to time. A judgement of'excessive populations" required by the performance standards should be based.on employee and public complaints and the frequency of reports of stings when at or near the open face. Should a problem develop, the inspector should try to determine where the wasp populations are nesting so that appropriate corrective measures can be determined. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and may take advantage of the wastes not being covered at night for food and harborage. If excessive numbers occur, they would be noted during the day as well. If cockroaches are suspected or notes to be present, special cockroach traps, containing an a t pheromone and a sticky material inside a small box, can be placed out overnight in the area of the open face. This can be done in conjunction with the rodent trapping survey. DON=C RAT S Ann„ priate Tra s and Baits Either the conventional live trap (5" x 5" x 16", made of 16 gauge wire with 1/2" top 1" openings) or the standard snap trap (3 1/2" x 7") is recommended for all rat surveys. Suitable live traps include those manufactured by the Tomahawk Live Trap Company or the National Live Trap Copany.I The standard snap traps are readily available at most local hardware stores. Baits must be especially attractive to rats to capture them on a landfill site offering an abundance of exposed putrescible wastes. The inspector may have to experiment to establish the best bait for a given situation. In general, Norway rats prefer meat, fish, and 'n; whereas, roof rates prefer fruits, vegetables, and nut meats. Large-kibbled dog food, snail pieces of bacon, slat pork, or frankfurter and dried fruit, such as prunes or raisins have been used successfully to trap rats.
