Allied Waste has retained LFR to conduct environmental
monitoring at the Austin Road Landfill. Soil-gas monitoring is conducted quarterly at the Austin
Road Landfill. As a result of a delay in the completion of the transfer of the landfill from the City
of Stockton to Allied Waste, soil-gas monitoring was not conducted during the third quarter of
2000.
Procedures
Measurements were collected using a Landtec GEM 2000 gas analyzer and extraction monitor. A
reading of ambient air in the vicinity of the probe to be tested was recorded before soil gas was
measured at each probe. The GEM 2000 analyzer was attached to the soil-gas probe and gas was
extracted by the internal pump of the device. Readings for methane and oxygen were monitored for
at least five minutes or until the readings stabilized. The readings were recorded and the well was
closed.
Results
Methane and oxygen measurements were collected at Austin Road Landfill on November 30, 2000.
Soil-gas probe locations are shown on Figure 1. Monitoring results are presented in Table 1.
The gas analyzer read between 0.0 and 0.1 percent volume for methane for all the soil-gas probes
measured during the November event. Oxygen at soil-gas probes SGP-13 and SGP-14 was
measured at reduced levels of 7.2 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively, during the fourth quarter
of 2000.
1900 Powell Street, 12th Floor, Emeryville, California 94608-1827 • (510) 652-4500 • fax (510) 652-2246 • www.Ifr.com
Offices Worldwide
