A portion of the soil was
then transferred into polyvinyl chloride (PVC) buckets which were then labeled, sealed, and
transported to the laboratory. In the laboratory, portions of each sample were removed
from the buckets and mixed together to form a composite sample for testing. The
composites samples were formulated to represent a particular soil type observed in the field.
The soil samples were analyzed for optimum moisture and maximum dry density (Proctor
Test) using the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) Method D-1557 A and
permeability using the ASTM Method 5084.
Table 1 provides a summary of the observed characteristics of the soil samples included in
each composite sample.
Composite Depth Pit Nttmbm Observed Sod
CliaracteristiCs
Sample Interval
Number (feet BSG)
R-1 0 to 25 P-2, P-3, Organic CLAY; Black; high plasticity, well developed prismatic structure to
P4, and P-7 depth of 4 to 8 cm with fractures to 05 to 2 cm in width; calcium carbonate
from trace amount to blebs 2 to 3 mm dia comprising approximately 201'o to 3%
of sample. damp; slight organic odor, transitional contact over 6 inches with
underlvin2 unit.
R-2 0 to 3 P-1, P-5, organic CLAY; Black; moderate to high plasticity, well developed prismatic
P-6, and P-8 fracturing at surface 2 to 25 cm in width extending downward to a depth of 4 to
6 cm; trace of fine sand, coarse sand, gravel (to 15 cm dia) and minor blebs
calcium carbonate comprising 1% of sample; damp to moist; organic odor,
contact with underlying unit is transitional over 6 inches. 8 inch thick
accumulation of calcium carbonate with sharp contacts observed at base of unit
in P-8.
R-3 4 to 55 P-2 Silty CLAY to Clayey SELT; yellowish brown; moderate to high plasticity, no
visible bedding, strong calcium carbonate development (present throughout but
not providing cementing property); moist; no odor, contact with overlying unit
transitional over 4 inches.
5 to 10 P-5 Sandy CLAY; light olive brown; moderately plastic, 20 to 30% fine grain sand;
moist, no odor, clay breaks into nodule to 25 cm dia.
4 to 11 P-7 Sandy CLAY; yellowish brown; moderately plastic; 15 to 20016 fine grain sand; no
visible bedding, moist, no odor.
