B. Butt-Fusion Joining: Butt-fusion of pipes and fittings shall be performed in
accordance with the pipe manufacturer's recommendations as to equipment and
technique. Depending on site conditions, butt-fusion joining shall be performed
in or outside of the excavation at the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR's option.
3.6 PLACEMENT IN LEACHATE COLLECTION TRENCH
A. General: Care shall be exercised when lowering pipe into the trench to prevent
damage or twisting of the pipe.
B. Pipe Base: Pipe and fittings shall be laid directly on Coarse Gravel in leachate
collection trench as shown on Construction Drawings. The trench bottom shall be
carefully shaped to conform to the shape of the pipe and fittings for the bottom
one-quarter of the pipe.
C. Coarse Gravel Backfill: Backfill material shall be as specified in Section 02300,
EARTHWORK, and shall be placed in accordance with that Section and as shown
on the Construction Drawings.
3.7 CONNECTION AND REMOVAL OF 3-INCH DIAMETER WMU ART-03 AND FU-
04 LEACHATE COLLECTION PIPES
A. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall develop a leachate mangement plan
with the OWNER, DESIGN ENGINEER, and QA/QC CONSULTANT to address
the control and containment of leachate during connection and removal of LCRS
pipes and trenches.
B. Remove existing WMU ART-03 3-inch perforated leachate collection pipe at
locations indicated on the Construction Drawings. Place end cap on the western
end of the portion of the WMU ART-03 3-inch perforated leachate collection pipe
that is to remain in-place. Wrap filter geotextile over coarse gravel at the western
end of the portion of the WMU ART-03 LRS trench that is to remain in-place.
C. Cut and place end cap on western WMU ART-03 solid 3-inch HDPE leachate
header pipe at the top of the former Austin Road Landfill slope once the WMU
ART-03 LCRS (i.e. granular drainage material layer) is connected to the WMU
FU-03 LCRS (i.e. geocomposite drainage net).
D. Remove eastern WMU ART-03 solid 3-inch HDPE leachate header pipe and clay
plug at southern WMU ART-03 termination berm.
E. Connect WMU ART-03 and WMU FU-04 3-inch perforated HDPE pipes using
appropriate coupler. Extend filter geotextile and coarse gravel as necessary to
connect LCRS trenches. Overlap filter geotextile a minimum 3-feet.
F. As shown on the Construction Drawings, route 3-inch solid HDPE leachate
header pipe from eastern end of WMU FU-04 (located on the top deck of the
former Austin Road Landfill) to the base of the WMU FU-04 cell. The 3-inch
solid HDPE leachate header pipe shall only be routed to the base of the WMU
Forward Landfill WMU FU-04
02535 4 LEACHATE PIPES
