2. The GCL shall be internally reinforced through a process such as needle
punching through the top and bottom layers of geotextile and the bentonite.
The reinforcing fibers shall be a polypropylene thread. The tensile strength
of the fibers shall not be affected by hydration with water.
3. Prior to packaging the finished product, the manufacturer shall inspect each
roll, over the entire surface area, for the presence of sewing needles. All
needles shall be removed or the rolls shall be rejected.
4. The hydraulic conductivity of the GCL shall be no greater than 5 x 10-9
cm/s, when measured in a flexible wall permeameter, under an effective
confining stress of 5 psi (35 kN/m2). Hydraulic conductivity tests shall be
performed by the Manufacturer at a frequency of 1 test every 100,000 s£
5. The peel strength of the internally reinforced GCL must equal or exceed 15
lb/in (MARV) when measured by ASTM D4632. Peel strength tests shall
be performed by the Manufacturer at a frequency of 1 test every 40,000 sf of
finished GCL. The test results shall be provided to the QA/QC
CONSULTANT.
6. The bentonite will be adhered to the backing material in a manner that
prevents it from being dislodged when transported, handled, and installed in
a manner prescribed by the manufacturer. The bentonite will be held in
place by mechanically connecting of the fiber or filaments of the carrier
layers. The method used to hold the bentonite in place will not be
detrimental to other components of the liner system. A minimum of 1 lb/ft2
of bentonite (Wet Weight) will be present in the geosynthetic clay liner,
when measured at a water content, by weight, of 12 percent. Water content
of the bentonite shall not be greater than 12 percent,by weight, at the time of
installation.
7. The interfacial and internal shear strength of the side slope liner system will
be tested per ASTM D6243 and ASTM D5321 to post-peak conditions.
Post-peak conditions are defined as the point at which the applied shear
force remains constant with increasing shear displacement. The minimum
post-peak shear displacement shall be 3 inches. In testing, upper or lower
boxes can be interchanged depending on the type of equipment. Submit,
one each, 6"x6" coupons of geomembrane and GCL from the rolls of
material that were used for each test. Testing shall be performed such that
orientation of materials being tested (i.e. which side is up) is consistent with
orientation of installation in the field.
a. The QA/QC CONSULTANT shall perform the shear strength testing
per ASTM D6243 for the proposed liner system components (GCL
vs. geomembrane and geocomposite drainage net) in accordance
with the following:
1) Measure initial moisture content of the bentonite component of the
GCL.
2) Measure the asperity of the geomembrane[GRI GM-12].
Forward Landfill WMU FU-04 4 GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINER (GCL)
02777
