Municipal solid waste (Class III refuse) is currently being placed in WMU ART-03 at a 3:1 grade.
Once refuse placement in WMU ART-03 achieves final grades,an approximately 4-ft thick layer of
subgrade fill will be placed over the refuse to provide support for the side slope interface liner. The
side slope interface liner will be placed to separate the municipal solid wastes in WMU ART-03
from the designated wastes(Class II refuse)placed in WMU FU-03. The side slope interface liner
consists of a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) overlain by a 60-mil, single-sided textured, HDPE
geomembrane, and a single-sided geocomposite drainage net(GDN). Leachate from this portion of
the WMU FU-04 construction will drain into WMU FU-03.
A relatively flat area exists between the toe of the WMU ART-03 refuse and the top of the
approximately 5:1 former Austin Road Landfill southern slope. Because this area is underlain by
refuse, geogrid reinforcement will be placed in this area to support the overlying liner and LCRS.
1.3 Reference Documents
The following reference documents provide background information and support this CQA manual:
• WMUFU-04 Design and Construction Documents, Forward Landfill, BAS and Lewis
Engineering, 2004.
• American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)Annual Book of ASTM Standards.
Section 4 Construction, Volume 04.02 Concrete and Aggregates.
• American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)Annual Book of ASTM Standards.
Section 4 Construction, Volume 04.08 Soil and Rock; Dimension Stone;
GEOSYNTHETICS.
• American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)Annual Book of ASTM Standards.
Section 8 Plastics, Volumes 08.01 Plastics (I), 08.02 Plastics (II), and 08.03 Plastics
(III).
• American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO),
Specifications and Volume II Tests.
Page 3
