C
E
extinguishers. Fire extinguishers are serviced one time per year and every time they are used by
Butch Young (contractor).
Small fires at the landfill, if they occur, are extinguished by site personnel ing stockpiled soil
cover and, if needed, by using on-site water trucks fitted for fire fighting Water for the water
trucks is supplied from the on-site well. An overhead fill is located ad' cent to the well. In
addition, trained firefighters (Linden Fire Department) can be mobil' ed for larger fires, if
needed.
To prevent fires from spreading to neighboring properties, afir break is maintained along the
entrance road (Plate 2.1).
7.7.2. Leachate Control
The landfill operator uses daily cover and berms nea the active area to divert stormwater away
from the active area so that it does not come into c ntact with the waste; thereby reducing the
generation of leachate.
I
Leachate that is generated from Module 1 fl ,s to a leachate sump from which it is pumped
either to a storage tank or returned to the re use to
in accordance with the WDRs. Leachate
from the storage tank is ultimately return d back to the waste in the lined modules in accordance
with the Waste Discharge Requiremen
7.7.3. Dust Control
Dust from site operations is co trolled by watering haul roads; applying a fine spray on soil
cover work areas when Gond' ions might create excessive dust and planting vegetation on
intermediate soil cover, an planting and maintaining vegetation on complete fill areas.
Watering is accompli ed with the use of water trucks with sprinklers on the front and back.
Frequency of water pplication is dependent upon the season and site conditions. The most
frequent application will occur during the summer in windy conditions. The performance
standard of "controlling visible dust" dictates the frequency of water application.
Foothill Sanitary Landfill Page 54 of 62 Public Works/Solid Waste
JTD County of San Joaquin — Revised 10/6/05
