As-Built CQA Report for the Construction of Area 2A at the Foothill Sanitary Landfill
San Joaquin County,California
• manufacturers' plants and the conformance samples were shipped to their Anaheim laboratory by
sampling technicians. AES had provided lists of samples for conformance testing, based on the
quantity, batch numbers, and review of MQC test results. Conformance samples for additional
geotextile rolls brought in due to material shortage were selected and sampled at the site by AES
CQA Monitors.
Conformance test samples were taken across the entire width of the roll and did not include the
first 3 feet. Samples were typically 3 feet long by the roll width. After samples were cut from the
rolls, they were marked to show the machine direction with an arrow and the manufacturer's roll
number on each sample. This sampling protocol was followed by Precision for their sampling at the
plants and by AES for sampling the rolls at the landfill Site.
The results of conformance tests were reviewed to verify compliance with the Specification
requirements. Appendix G (G.1 though G.5) includes the conformance test results for various
geosynthetic materials.
Appendix GA -GCL
Appendix G.2 -60-mil DST HDPE Geomembrane
Appendix G.3 -8-oz Geotextile
Appendix G.4-Geocomposite
• Appendix G.5 -Interface Shear Test Results
6.4.1 GCL Conformance Testing
The GCL used in the Area 2A composite liner construction was BentoLiner NWL-45 manufactured
by GSE Environmental, LLC (GSE) at their plant at Spearfish, South Dakota. It consisted of sodium
bentonite encapsulated between two 6-oz nonwoven geotextiles, needle-punched to prevent
separation during transport, handling, and installation, and to provide reinforcement designed to
achieve relatively high internal and interface strengths. Following approval of the MQC data,
conformance samples were collected at the Manufacturer's plant based on a test frequency of one
sample per 100,000 sf or one sample per lot, whichever gave a greater number of tests. A total of
311 rolls, each 15.5 ft wide and 150 ft in length, for a total area of 720,750 sf, were supplied for the
project. Precision collected a total of 11 samples of GCL,and performed conformance testing for the
following properties, as per the Specifications. The test results are summarized below and are
listed in Table 7. The laboratory data sheets are included in Appendix G.1. All of the test results
were in conformance with the Project Specifications.
•
PA14 Projects114-101(SJCDPW North County and Foothillffoothill CQAIRepoffinal Repoffoothill CQA Rport-Final.docx
19
