As-Built CQA Report for the Construction of Area 2A at the Foothill Sanitary Landfill
San Joaquin County,California
• 10.0 MISCELLANEOUS CONSTRUCTION
10.1 GENERAL
Miscellaneous constructions discussed in this section include anchor trench backfills, perimeter
earthfill berms, construction of access road, drainage features and the leachate pump, force main
and controls.
10.2 ANCHOR TRENCH BACKFILL
The anchor trenches were excavated using a CAT 320 excavators with a 2-foot bucket along eastern
liner termination and down the southern edge along the eastern slope and western edge of the
northern slope. After geosynthetics installation was completed, the trenches were backfilled with
earthfill having a particle size of less than 3 inches. The fill was placed in 4 to 6-inch thick loose lifts
and compacted to a minimum 90 percent relative compaction based on ASTM D1557 using hand
held compactors. AES observed backfill placement operation to ensure trench backfill materials
were compacted without causing any damage to the liner system. Field density test results for the
anchor trench backfill are presented in Table 3. Field density test locations are shown in Figure 5.
10.3 PERIMETER LINER TERMINATION BERMS
• Earthfill berms were constructed over the liner terminations around the western and southern
limits of the installed liner. The earthfill was hauled using CAT 745 articulating trucks. Dumped
soil was moisture conditioned and spread in 8-inch loose lifts by a CAT D6 bulldozer. The earthfill
was compacted by CAT CP54 self-propelled sheepsfoot compactor. AES observed the earthfill
placement operation. Field density test results for the perimeter earthfill berm are presented in
Table 1. The earthfill was compacted to a minimum 90 percent relative compaction, in accordance
with ASTM D1557.
10.4 ACCESS ROAD
A 40-foot wide access road descending into the Area 2A floor from the northwest (See Sheet C-3 of
Construction Drawings in Appendix D.1) was paved with a 6-inch section of Class 2 aggregate base
overlying a pavement reinforcement geotextile. Prior to placement of the pavement materials, the
road subgrade was overexcavated 2.5 feet and backfilled. The backfill was moisture conditioned
and compacted to 95 percent relative compaction based on ASTM D1557. AES CQA Monitor
monitored backfill and preparation of pavement subgrade and performed compaction tests with a
nuclear gage. Field compaction test results for the backfill and subgrade are summarized in
Table 1. Field density test locations are shown on Figure S. Observation and testing of the
aggregate base was performed by the County inspectors.
•
PA14 Projects114-101(SJCDPW North County and Foothill)IFoothill CQA1ReportlFinal ReportToothill CQA Rport-Final.docx
35
