The following general requirements shall be followed when using <br /> powered industrial trucks: <br /> • Powered industrial trucks(PITS)shall be operated only by employees who have received proper <br /> instruction, including annual refresher training and authorization,as per CMS-710-02-PR-00800. <br /> Operator training shall include traffic regulations,the load and balance characteristics of the objects <br /> they will typically be moving,procedures for the safe refueling or recharging of the equipment, etc. <br /> • All PTTs shall be maintained in good repair.No employee shall operate a PIT that is in need of <br /> repair, or is defective which makes it unsafe in any way. Such equipment shall be immediately <br /> removed from service after notifying the immediate supervisor. <br /> • All employees who work in the vicinity of PITS shall receive appropriate training and instruction in <br /> safe work practices around such equipment. <br /> • All PITs shall be equipped with a fire extinguisher in proper working order. <br /> • PITS shall not be used in locations with atmospheres that may present an explosion hazard due to <br /> flammable gases, combustible dust,or ignitable fibers or filings,unless they have been modified by <br /> the manufacturer to operate in such environments. <br /> • In situations where PITS are used to raise loads above the operator's height,they shall be fitted with <br /> overhead guards and vertical load backrest extensions that will protect the operator from falling loads. <br /> • All PITs shall be inspected and tested for proper operation before being operated. <br /> • Operators shall always face in the direction of travel. <br /> • Seat belts shall be worn at all times. <br /> • Horns and backup warning devices, if so equipped, shall be operational. <br /> • No one shall be allowed to stand or pass under the elevated portion of any PIT. <br /> • When a PIT is unattended(operator out of sight of PIT,or>25 feet away)the operator shall fully <br /> lower the load or the load engaging mechanism,neutralize all controls, shut off the motor, and set the <br /> brakes. The wheels shall be blocked if the PIT is on the incline. <br /> • Passengers shall not be allowed on PITs unless such a place has been provided for that purpose by the <br /> manufacturer. <br /> The following special precautions shall be followed during loading and unloading operations, and when <br /> traveling when a load: <br /> • The operator shall maintain a safe distance from the edge of ramps,platforms, or excavations. <br /> • Operators shall only lift loads that are within the rated capacity of the PIT. Long or high loads may <br /> alter this capacity. Redistribute such loads when necessary. <br /> • Off-center loads should be avoided or handled with extreme caution. <br /> • The load should be placed as far back on the load-engaging mechanism as possible. <br /> 5-9 <br />
