• The mast of a forklift should only be tilted backwards far enough to stabilize the load. It should only <br /> be tilted forward when the load is over the set down point. <br /> • Under all load conditions,the PIT shall be operated at a speed that allows safe and smooth travel, <br /> cornering,and stopping. <br /> • Always travel with the load raised only as far as needed to clear the road surface. Raise and lower it <br /> over obstructions. <br /> • Carry the load upgrade whenever ascending or descending a slope greater than 10 percent. <br /> The following precautions shall be observed during refueling operations: <br /> • PTTs shall not be refueled while the engine is running. <br /> • Fuel spills on the equipment shall be cleaned up, and discarded properly,and fuel tank caps shall be <br /> replaced before the PIT is restarted. <br /> • PITs shall not be operated with leaks in the fuel system. <br /> • Liquid petroleum(LP)tanks shall be removed and replaced in accordance with the manufacturer's <br /> instructions. <br /> • Open flames shall not be used to check the level of fuel in fuel tanks. <br /> • Batteries shall be recharged in areas designated for that purpose. The following safety precautions <br /> shall be adhered to during battery charging activities: <br /> • Facilities for fire protection,first aid,and for the ventilation or dispersal of gases generated by the <br /> recharging batteries shall be available. <br /> • A hoist and conveyor, or other handling equipment,for lifting and carrying the batteries shall be <br /> available. <br /> • Provisions for the flushing of eyes and an emergency shower shall be available. <br /> • Smoking shall be prohibited in the recharging area,and other precautions shall be taken to avoid open <br /> flames and sparks. <br /> • Care should be taken to make sure vent caps are working properly, and the battery compartment <br /> should be open to disperse heat and gases during recharging. <br /> 5.1.15 Chain Saw Safety <br /> Chain saws used to cut HDPE and other plastic pipes must be in good working order and have a sharp <br /> tight chain and chain movement mechanisms. <br /> The chainsaw controls must operate as described in the Operator's Manual and the Operators Manual <br /> must have been thoroughly reviewed by the operator before using the Chain Saw. <br /> When cutting pipe the chainsaw stop must be firmly against the pipe being cut, the saw cannot be held <br /> free to cut pipe. This can cause saw jumping and grabbing and may cause chain failure, which could <br /> cause extensive injuries. <br /> 5-10 <br />
