CY/Ton Disposal Site Conversion Factors
YEAR CONVERSION FACTOR
1989 .1844
1990 .1726
1991 .1753
1992 .1838
1993 .1867
1994 .1920
D. SELF-HAUL CONVERSION FACTOR:
Although the Lovelace Transfer Station, Foothill Sanitary Landfill, and the North County
Recycling Center And Sanitary Landfill have scales, only the larger vehicles using these sites
are weighed. Loads delivered in smaller, self-haul vehicles are recorded by volume.
Therefore, it is necessary to calculate a factor to convert the cubic yard volume of smaller
vehicles nonweighed waste to tons. In developing this conversion factor, it is assumed that
waste delivered to the Lovelace Transfer Station in small vehicles is comparable to the small
vehicle waste at other County sites. Thus, the conversion factor calculated for the Lovelace
Transfer Station is applicable to other sites for similar vehicle type nonweighed waste.
i
This factor was calculated as follows:
Total outgoing tons 1994 137,139
Less: Weight of incoming weighed waste 96.262
Equals: Weight of nonweighed incoming waste. 40,877
Divided by: cy volume of incoming
nonweighed waste 134,772
Equals: Conversion factor for cy to tons .3033
The .3033 factor, or 607 pounds per cubic yard, is used in this report to convert
nonweighed smaller vehicle type waste to tons for the Foothill Sanitary Landfill and North
County Recycling Center And Sanitary Landfill. This conversion factor is based on annual
data. Monthly conversion factors are used in some cases, which creates some minor
variations in data.
The self-haul conversion factor has also changed through the years, as the following table
indicates.
4
