U
ex compactor. The perimeter anchorage berm was constructed in two 1-f thick
li For the first lift of material which was placed directly on exposed GD , a clayey
sand erial was used while sandy clay was used to fill the remainder of a berm. The
southern t ination berm was constructed of the same sandy material sed as operations
layer. The tem termination berm was constructed of sandy c material which was
compacted in 6 -in lifts using the -wheeled Pactor sheeps t compactor.
During soil component construction a D-93 liner and LCRS system, the CQA
Inspector observed the construction pract of the contractor and performed CQA testing.
CQA activities were performed as scribe in the CQA Manual (WMU D-93 Design
Report) with any exceptions note elo a program for the synthetic materials is
discussed in Sections 4 and 5
3.2.1 Clay
Approximatel 7,500 cubic yards (cy) of clay liner material was pla and compacted for
WMU D- . Components of the CQA program involved in the clay er construction
includ material evaluation and acceptance, construction observation, field t 'ng, labora-
to testing, and as -built surveying.
3.2.1.1 Clay Liner Material Acceptance Program (VAaw1au-6tT6-..Acm1xw)
1-1
Because the on-site clay soil sources would not meet the current 1.0 x 10' cm/sec regulato-
ry permeability requirement, Forward chose to use an admix to achieve the required per-
meability. The admix consisted of a mixture of imported Ione clay and onsite native clay.
A clay liner material acceptance program consisting of a preliminary admixture determina-
tion, test pad construction and CQA testing, and SDRI field -permeability testing was per-
formed. The clay liner acceptance program was established to confirm that the target
admixture would meet the 1 x 10'' cm/sec field permeability requirement and provide
laboratory permeability correlation to allow construction compliance testing.
Due to time constraints, Forward chose to perform two SDRI tests on separate test fills
constructed from mixtures of 25 percent and 50 percent Ione clay (dry weight basis). Both .
test fills were constructed to represent the conditions and methods anticipated during the
construction of the WMU D-93 compacted clay liner. The 25 percent Ione admixture
passed the clay liner acceptance program and was, therefore, used to construct the WMU
D-93 clay liner. The construction, laboratory, and SDRI testing results for the 50 percent
admixture test pad are included in this report for completeness.
Preliminary Admixture Determination. To estimate the target admixture, a laboratory
testing program was first conducted using 15, 25, and 40 percent Ione clay admixes.' The
laboratory testing program was performed by Kleinfelder of Pleasanton, California. The
sF010012901.wp5 3-5
