ASBESTOS EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
If broken containers are present, the following steps should be implemented:
a. Spray the containers and any loose asbestos containing material (ACM) with the
hose from the water tank located as the asbestos face. This equipment is described
in more detail in the Dust Control and Fire Suppression Program for the landfill.
b. Maintain the ACM in a damp state until the ACM can be covered with a soil
cover.
C. Push a soil cover over the working face to cover the ACM using the bulldozer.
Do not contact the bags.
Direct trucks with ACM to only dump the bagged ACM onto the working face. Do not
allow trucks to dump onto the flat compacted landfill surface.
If a truck with large amounts of loose AC (i.e. not in containers) arrives at the face,
inform the Landfill Operations Manager. Do not allow the truck to dump until the
Operations Manager has been notified andhe/she has determined whether the truck must
return the load to the original customer to rebag the contents.
Check that trucks have completely dumped the load and do not have loose ACM present
in the truck when leaving the working face. Use the hose from the water tank if necessary
to remove loose ACM from the truck.
Avoid actions which create airborne asbestos dust or which damage containers of ACM.
