over the northern, eastern, and western sides of WMU in 1999 and 2000 to
separate the ash from designated waste that would be placed above it. A final
cover was placed on the southern side in 1999.
WMU F North is an approximately 1-acre leachate impoundment located just
north of the South Branch of Little Johns Creek on the western side of the site.
WMU F North was constructed in 1999 as a double lined unit and contains a
GCL overlain by a 60-mil HDPE geomembrane, a geonet, and an additional
60-mil HDPE geomembrane. The leachate impoundment was sized based on
actual leachate generation records from 1991 to 1997 and has a design capacity
of approximately 3.5 million gallons.
Soil treatment and sludge drying is permitted to occur in WMU G. WMU G is
divided into G-North and G-South, according to whether they are north or south
of the South Branch. WMU G occupies the same areas as WMUs Future D
and H, and will eventually be replaced by these units. Forward has not been
treating soils or drying sludge during the last several years. If these activities
were to occur, appropriate lining systems would be installed.
The existing portion of the Austin Road Landfill encompasses a 123.9-acre area
located directly south of the North Branch of Little Johns Creek, as shown on
Figure 10. The landfill began accepting municipal solid wastes in 1954 and does
not contain a base liner or leachate collection and removal system (LCRS).
Wastes were initially landfilled utilizing the trench method. Trenches have been
excavated to an approximate 20-foot depth with the excavated materials used
for daily cover.
Future Permitted Waste Management Units
As depicted in Figure 10, future Class II WMUs are permitted in the remaining
portions of the northern (Future D) and southern portions (Future H) of the
existing Forward Landfill. The southern portion of the existing Austin Road
Landfill is also permitted as WMUs, however these areas are currently permitted
as Class II units.
WMU F South is currently permitted to be constructed in the southwest corner
of the existing Forward Landfill, south of the South Branch of Little Johns Creek.
WMU F South is permitted as a Class II impoundment.
Forward Landfill JTD 4-3
J:\Allied\Forward\JTD AmendmentUanuary 2007 JTD Amendment\JTD Sec 4 Final.doc:
05/24/02;Amendment No. 1: 2/6/2007 ®avant A.STtRaaT a ASSOCIATES
