The maintenance and storage area is currently located in the northwest corner of <br /> the existing Forward Landfill. The area is secured, and fenced but also mobile <br /> and can be moved around the site, as needed. The maintenance area includes <br /> portable buildings, storage areas for refuse bins, and parking areas for heavy <br /> equipment and cars. A complete vehicle repair service facility with an extensive <br /> inventory of spare parts is also maintained. The maintenance and storage area is <br /> operated in accordance with the site's SWPPP. <br /> The transfer station/resource recovery building is located just west of the landfill <br /> entrance that is south of the South Branch of Little Johns Creek. The building is a <br /> metal frame building that is open on one side. The total square footage of the <br /> building is approximately 12,000 square feet (sf). <br /> A third party landfill gas developer currently operates a methane gas recovery <br /> system at the Austin Road Landfill. The collected gas is used to power an <br /> electrical generation plant located at the northwest corner of the existing Austin <br /> Road Landfill. The developer takes enough landfill gas so that the power plant <br /> produces up to 760 kilowatts per hour of electrical power; this energy is sold to <br /> Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) under a long-term agreement. <br /> The existing Austin Road Landfill is currently under a Corrective Action Plan <br /> (CAP) for groundwater contamination by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). <br /> To comply with the CAP, a groundwater extraction and treatment system has <br /> been installed to mitigate detected chlorinated hydrocarbon in the first <br /> encountered groundwater beneath the existing Austin Road Landfill. <br /> All site surface water that has not come in contact with waste is directed to the <br /> sedimentation ponds. Three sedimentation ponds are located on the site. Two <br /> are located at the existing Forward Landfill, on either side of the South Branch in <br /> the southwest corner of the site. The third sedimentation pond is located <br /> directly west of the existing Austin Road Landfill.
