3.1.5.1 MATERIALS SEPARATION AND SORTING
Current operations at the RRF include wood waste processing and the transfer of
mixed recyclables is being added to the current operations. Past operations
have included recyclables separation and sorting. Following is a description of
the current wood waste separation procedures. Additionally, procedures for
recyclables sorting is also included since these operations may be reinstated at
the RRF based on market conditions and future refuse hauling contracts.
Wood Sorting Operation
Wood waste, lumber, and/or brush are placed in the wood waste stockpile area,
ground and processed in the wood chipper, and loaded directly into 120 cy, and
larger, trailers until sold at market. The wood stockpiles are limited to a 100 foot
by 150 foot area, 12 feet high, as specified by the local fire department. The wood
chipping operations are a minimum 100 feet from the RRF building.
Recyclables Sorting Operation
When the recyclables sorting operation is being conducted, wood, cardboard,
plastic, paper and newspaper, glass, and metals will be segregated from the waste
stream. Mechanized sorting may be done to process/separate the recyclables.
Currently, no sorting equipment is in-place within the RRF building. When a full
shipment of a specific material is ready, it will be transported to a secondary
materials market. The remaining unrecyclable wastes will be loaded into drop
boxes and transported to the landfill for disposal. None of the material recovery
activities will interfere with the RRF operation or traffic flow. The materials will be
sorted as follows:
Cardboard The cardboard will be separated out, flattened, baled and stored
inside the RRF building or outside on the southern side of the RRF
building for transport to Delta Paper Stock.
Plastic Plastic#1 (polyethylene terephthalate [PET]) and #2 (high density
polyethylene [HDPE]) will be sorted out and stored on the north
side of the RRF building in various sizes and types of non-reusable
containers such as wooden and cardboard boxes or plastic bins that
Forward,Inc.Resource Recovery Facility 3-7
Transfer/Processing Report
(L\Allied\2003.0146\Report\Final TPR\Sec3.doc10/22/03;Revision 1:11 20/200344J48/209 )
BRYAN A.STIRRAT F.ASSOCIATES
