'as little agitation as possible to reduce potential loss of volatile constituents. Major ions, 'DS,
and metals analyses (n non-preserved containers) will be collected next followed by samples to
be collected in preserved containers. Containers will be filled directly from the disposable bailer,
immediately capped, and placed in a temperature-monitored iced chest. Caution will be ,
used not
to overfill bottles containing a pseservvative. Temperature will be monitored by Pl;tctrig. a
6ennometer in the chest and.checking to make'sure thatthere is suffidcnt ice :the chest to
e .e a temperature of awdmatel 4 d i -
APP Y . degrees Celsius. The labOratoly will measure;
document, and report the temperature of the sample container upon anival at the gyratory..
The.analytical laboratory places a total of 2 ml of nitric acid in some of 2tie 1 liter bottles to
reduce the pH to below 2, On an annual basis.an extra preserved bottle will be filled with
.groundwater and-the pH measured in the bottle. It is'assumed that the pH will be below 2 If it
is not the field technician will add nitric acid in measured amounts until the pH is below 2 This
added quantity of acid will be placed in all the preserved bottles-during the following monitoring
rounds until it is checked again the following-y tar Sample..pH•-will- bc.confirm,-d-at.the•.:
laboratory and recorded. Deviations will be documented and reported by the laboratory.
Samples.to be su$mitted for metals analysis-will. be filtered in the field- Filtering-,vi11 be
-'- performed using an in.line, filter mechanism which uses the pumpingProcess of the dedicated
fie pump to draw water through the 4 micron*fHier- Anever filter will be used at each well. The new
filters -Mll have a minimum of one filter volume of groundwater pressuri d through them to-
re duce adsorption effects. The actual filtered.sample.will not be collected-until aminimum of
two fiber volumes of groundwater ha:5 been passed through tha filter. For wells wi6out
dedicated pumps, the samples are transferred from the bailer;through a filter apparatus, into the
appropriate sample container_ The filter apparatus consists of a Pressure vessel,a hand-operated
Pressure pump, and a filter cartridge. Water from the bailer is placed in the pressure vessel and
enough air, pressure(via the hand pump)is appliiad to force water through the filter cartridge into
sample mple bottles. The pressure vessel is washed in Aleonox, steam cleaned, and rinsed with
deionized water between wells_ A new filter cartridge is used at each well.
Samples will. be labeled with a unique sample identification number, project identification
number, sample location, and date and time sampled. Samples will be transpo_rte:d to the contract
laboratory under strict chain-of-custody procedures__
23 83849-
-4 .
