WMU FU-06 November 2006
Forward Landfill Project No.021605.07
® 5.0 GEOSYNTHET/CS CQA
5.1 General Description of Activities
The geosynthetics components of WMU FU-06 consisted of geosynthetic clay liner
(GCL), 60-mil HDPE geomembrane, geocoposite, geotextile, and geogrid. The
installation and associated CQA provided for each of these components are
discussed within the following sections.
5.2 Geosynthetic Clay Liner(GCL)
5.2.1 General
The GCL used in the construction of WMU FU-06 was manufactured by GSE. The
type of GCL material utilized was Bentofix NWL35, which consists of granular
bentonite encapsulated by two non-woven geotextiles.
5.2.2 GCL Manufacture and Delivery
® 5.2.2.1 Receiving Inspection
Upon arrival by truck shipment, Vector's CQA Monitor conducted the receiving
inspection that included labeling, transportation, handling, storage, and inventory.
Vector's CQA Monitor observed the unloading and storage of the GCL rolls and then
logged in each roll number. Information regarding the roll number, lot, batch,
laboratory testing, and pass/fail of the sheet was recorded. A copy of the log of GCL
received and the manufacturer's data are included in Appendix H.
5.2.2.2 GCL Conformance Testing
Samples of the GCL were cut from random rolls for conformance testing by the
third party testing laboratory at the manufacturing plant in accordance with the
CQA manual and project specifications. Conformance testing included tests for:
• bentonite mass per unit area (ASTM D-5993);
• hydraulic conductivity (ASTM D-5084);
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive•Grass Valley, CA 95945•(530)272-2448
-21-
