as little agitation as possible to reduce potential loss of volatile constituents. Major ions, 7DS,
and metals analyses (in non-preserved containers) will be collected next followed by samples to
be collected in preserved containers. Containers will be filled directly from the disposable bailer,
immediately capped, and placed in a
temperature-monitored iced chest. Caution will be Used not
to overfill bottles containing a pfeservative. Temperature will be monitored by placmg* a
thermometer in the chest and checking to make sure that there is'sufficientin he
IC.e chest to
maintain a temperature of approximately 4 degrees Celsius. The 'lab-oratory will measure,
document, and report the temperature of the sample container upon arrival at the laboratory..
The analytical laboratory places a total of 2 ml of nitric add-in some of the I liter bottles to
reduce the pH to below. 2. On an annual basis an extra preserved bottle will be .filled with
groundwater and-the pH measured in the bottle. It is'assumed that the PH will be-below 2; If it
is not the field technician will add nitric acid in measured amounts until the pH is below 2. This
added quantity of acid will be placed in all the preserved bottics.durin.9 the following m
. onitoring
rounds until it is checked again the following-y!:ar-Sample:-pH--vvilI"- be-confirmed:at:the,_:
laboratory and recorded- Deviations will be documented and reported by the laboratory_
Samples;to be submitted for metals analysis-will. be filtered in the field- Filtering-will be
performed using an in Eric filter mechanism which uses the-pumping ' - c
process-of. he dedicated
pumpto draw water through the 4 micron filter-_ A new filter will be used at each well. The new ,
filters -will have a minimum of one filter volume of groundwater pressurized
through them to-
reduce adsorption effects. The actual filtered-sample.will not be collected.until a minimum of
two filter volumes of groundwater has been passed through the filter. For wells without
dedicated pumps, the samples are transferred from the bailer, through a filter apparatus,. into the
appropriate sample container- The filter apparatus consists of a pressure vessel, a hand-operated.
pressure pump, and a filter cartridge- Water from the bailer is placed in the pressure -vessel and
enough air pressure(via the hand pump)is applied to force water through the Meer cartridge into
the sample bottles. The pressure vessel is washed in Alconox, steam cleaned, and rinsed with
deicnized water between wells. A new Mter cartridge is used at each well.
Simples will be labeled with a unique sample identification number, project identification
number, sample location, and date and time sampled. Samples will be transported to the contract
Laboratory under strict chain-of-custody procedures-
' 023483 949-FO I W I OR325 A-9 July 14,2004
CMY4ht 2000 KkWcldcr,la,_
