3.4 EXCAVATION A. Perform all excavation of every description, regardless of the type, nature, or condition of material encountered, as specified, shown, or required to accomplish the construction. Transport excavated material to where it will be placed or to the designated stockpile area. Any refuse excavated shall be placed in active landfill areas, as directed by the OWNER. B. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall selectively stockpile the onsite fine- grained material to use as Clay Liner Material, Clay Plug, or Clay Earthfill. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall also selectively stockpile material appropriate for use as protective operations layer. C. Soils to be excavated are variable. Fine-grained material suitable for use as the Clay Liner material, Clay Plug, or Clay Earthfill may only be encountered in thin intermittent seams. D. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall make all reasonable efforts to determine the type of soil being excavated at all times. Equipment operators or the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR's representative directing excavation shall have sufficient knowledge and, understanding of soil classifications to determine general soil type. E. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall stockpile excavated material in accordance with Section 3.6 of this Specification and shall direct equipment operators to the appropriate stockpile area depending on the soil classification of the majority of material that makes up the excavation equipment's payload. F. Refuse may be encountered in some excavation areas within WMU FU -06. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall notify the DESIGN ENGINEER and QA/QC CONSULTANT if refuse is encountered in areas other than at tie- ins/connections to existing WMUs at the site. The DESIGN ENGINEER will provide guidance on the depth the refuse shall be excavated and the appropriate backfill procedures. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall dispose of the excavated refuse in the active portion of the landfill or as directed by the OWNER. G. Excavation to be carried out for the convenience of the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall conform to the limits approved by the DESIGN ENGINEER, QA/QC CONSULTANT, and OWNER and shall be at no additional expense to the OWNER. H. Excavated material shall be placed a sufficient distance from the edge of excavations to prevent cave-ins or bank slides. I. The CONTRACTOR shall excavate to sufficient lines and grades to construct the compacted clay liner and sumps as shown on the Construction Drawings and described in these Specifications.
