n
3. If the clay liner becomes softened due to moisture changes, scarify and mix
full depth of damage, adjust water content to specified value, and recompact
as previously specified, at the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR's sole
expense.
F. Field Quality Control
1. As the clay liner is being placed and compacted, the QA/QC
CONSULTANT will be monitoring the construction activities and soil
properties as described in the CQA Manual. Acceptance testing frequencies
are defined in the CQA Manual. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR
shall cooperate with the QA/QC CONSULTANT in obtaining samples for
the CQA acceptance testing, and in leveling and backfilling areas designated
by the QA/QC CONSULTANT.
2. The location of acceptance testing shall be determined solely by the QA/QC
CONSULTANT. The QA/QC CONSULTANT may test any lift of the clay
liner at any time, location, or elevation.
3. Holes left by sampling and testing shall be backfilled by the EARTHWORK
CONTRACTOR using the Clay Liner Material.
4. If acceptance testing by the QA/QC CONSULTANT indicates that the Clay
Liner Material does not meet specified requirements for density, water
content, or lift thickness, the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall
terminate material placement until corrective measures are taken at the
EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR's sole expense. Corrective measures
could include, but are not limited to, scarifying and recompacting of
material or removal of material that does not meet the requirements of these
Specifications.
5. If acceptance testing by the QA/QC CONSULTANT indicates that the Clay
Liner Material does not meet specified requirements for particle size,
classifications, plasticity, or hydraulic conductivity, then the Clay Liner
Material which failed will be retested. If the second test results indicate
failure to meet the specified requirements, the QA/QC CONSULTANT may
order a design modification or the removal, disposal, and replacement of the
unsuitable Clay Liner Material.
6. Clay Liner Acceptance: Final acceptance of the clay liner will be based on
acceptance and control tests made on completed Work, on material samples
taken from the completed layer, and the thickness as calculated from the top
of subgrade and top of clay liner surveys. Acceptance testing for final
acceptance shall be performed by the soil testing laboratory in accordance
with these Specifications and the CQA Manual.
G. Protection:
1. Do not route or allow construction traffic, except as necessary, on top of
clay liner once material has been placed and compacted.
2. Constructed clay liner shall be maintained to meet the requirements of this
Specification until final completion and acceptance of the Work. This shall
include all measures to prevent erosion. During seasonal or other extended
shutdowns, all exposed surfaces shall be protected as detailed in Article 3. 1,
Forward Landfill WMU FU -06
02300
17
EARTHWORK
